I'm Sure That Was More Than Seven Percent.

Speaking of re-imaginings of classic characters, the trailer for the new Sherlock Holmes movie looks kind of entertaining, in a complete "What the hell where they smoking when they made this?!" kind of way:

  1. Indeed.

Mind you, nowadays all movies trailers seem to give that impression. I bet that if they made a movie of "Tellietubbies", the trailer would manage to give the impression that it was full of sex and violence. :)

  2. I think a sex-and-violence-filled Teletubbies trailer would be hilarious. :)

  3. If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all, so here goes. (ahem) At least the actor playing Watson is English.

  5. Watson is played by Jude Law. It's clearly a sexed-up, violent-action, buddy-movie version of Holmes, but it could be fun.

The thing that bugged me most about the Star Trek remake wasn't that they strayed so far from the original characters in their re-imaginings, but that they strayed not far enough. That film tried to be both a prequel and a remake, and, while entertaining enough, failed at being both.

  6. Jude Law? Huh. I completely failed to recognize him, but then, I'm very bad with faces, even famous ones. And it does look like it might be fun, in, well, exactly a "What were you smoking when you decided to do this with Holems?" kind of movie.

As for Star Trek, I think it was trying to walk kind of an impossible tightrope, but one I suspect that it did kind of need to try to walk in order to have any chance at all of overcoming the mental resistance of, well, people like me.

  7. I liked the joke about Holmes playing the violin at 3am.

  8. I think Star Trek was fan fiction by non-fans.

Sherlock Holmes, however, has become such a part of the public consciousness, and has been reinterpreted so many different ways, that I don't feel I even need to hold out high hopes for this new Guy Ritchie version.

  9. As I said in my post on the movie, I do think of it as being basically a big-budget fan film, which really does help. I've encountered much worse things written by fans.

And I agree about Holmes, which is why I'm more amused than unhappy. :)

  10. Wow.
I don't even know how to put my annoyance. Sherlock Holmes was a big deal for me...I've read the stories many many times over the years. He was an odd character with unusual tendencies, but...this just is a bit too much...well it looks not that good. Or at least the trailer is cut to appeal to people who probably wouldn't ordinarily read Sherlock Holmes. Why?
I like Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as actors...I'm hoping maybe maybe they can pull something out of this...I'm trying to be open minded, but this does *not* encourage me :)

  11. I strongly suspect the key to enjoying this one may be refusing to take it remotely seriously. :)

  12. I just wish Hollywood had taken it seriously.
