Me and Sarah Jane

The wrist feels quite a bit better today. Hooray! I can type!

Wish the rest of me felt nearly as much improved, though. My muscles are all sore from yesterday's yardwork activities, my allergies are acting up, my bunions hurt, and my sleep patterns are severely messed up from switching off of night shifts after a couple of months on them. Also, I appear to have become whiny.

In happier news, though, I've obtained the current episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures, the new Doctor Who spinoff for kids, from the UK, and, oh, my, but Sarah Jane rocks. The show is excellent kids' TV, intelligent and fun. Watching it makes me feel like a happy seven-year-old again, which is pretty much exactly what I needed this week.

  1. I was wondering what the show might be like.

  2. I wasn't expecting much, to be honest, but I'm very pleasantly surprised. It's better than Torchwood. :)

  3. Oooh...how'd you swing the Sarah Jones episodes? I've been really curious about those and hoping they'd make it over here. You have quite the Who connections there...

  4. Many interesting things can be found via sites like minivova. Not that you heard it from me. :)

  5. From what I have watched of Torchwood on YouTube, it couldn't be that hard to top it.

  6. Torchwood has real promise, it just... fails to live up to it a lot. So far.

  7. Yeah, that's been my general feeling on Torchwood. Take a really great, likable and energetic character, strip him of the qualities that made them give him a spinoff in the first place, and stick him a bunch of run-of-the-mill supernatural sci-fi stories.

I was quite pleased the Sarah Jane, although I've only seen the Christmas/pilot episode so far. At the risk of sounding crass, Elisabeth Sladen looks phenomenal for 60.

  8. Not crass at all, IMHO. She does. And it's wonderful to see her on the screen proving that an older women get be attractive, active, and smart.

What I find really amusing, by the way, is the thought it if I had some kind of alien-related problem, I'd probably rather have Sarah Jane's kids on the case than Torchwood. :)

  9. Which is fine. I don't dislike Torchwood because they're incompetent. As you've noted, therein may lie some of the show's (not very considerable) charm. But when the writing is incompetent.

Maybe it's a question of tone. I found Sarah Jane much more in the spirit of Doctor Who, which is probably because both are intended as "children's shows."

  10. Sarah Jane has very much the sensibility of classic Who, yeah, which pretty much guarantees me liking it. Torchwood going for a more adult feel is fine -- Doctor Who itself never had struck me as essentially a kids' show -- but the problem is that they're trying far too hard to be adult, and are making the common mistake of confusing "adult" in the sense of "mature" with "adult" in the sense of "full of gratuitous violence and sex." The latter does not logically lead to the former.

I'm not as down on Torchwood as a lot of people... I do at least find it entertaining, generally, and it has its really good moments. I'm just hoping it grows up a little.

  11. So I finally caught "Revenge of the Slitheen." I thought it did a really neat job of referencing the Who episode(s) but also doing its own thing. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
