I finally got around to calling the phone company and asking them to come out and install a phone jack in my living room, so that a) I can actually have a phone in the living room, which is far and away the most convenient place to keep one, and b) I can put a bookcase in front of the phone jack I'm using now, because that's a much better place for a bookcase than a phone.
They said someone would be here between noon and 5 PM today. It is now 4:40. Any bets on whether they're actually going to show?
[ETA: Five o'clock sharp, and they just called to say they're on their way. OK, whatever...]

Aha! So that's why my phone service went down: they disconnected my line to take to your house.
