Doctor Who Materializes Here This Summer

Because I know there are people reading this who are interested, a bit of news: The Sci Fi Channel is going to be showing the third season of the new Doctor Who starting in July. Being the impatient and obsessive type I am, I've already watched the four episodes that have aired in the UK thus far, and I'd say they range in quality from borderline brilliant to kind of dumb... but I love the new companion and think David Tennant is very much on form. My fellow Americans should definitely check it out!

  1. I think I read somewhere that one of these episodes has a Christmas theme. 'Twould be weird to watch that in July, no? :)

  2. There is a Christmas episode, yep. It's not technically speaking part of season 3, but it will be shown before season 3 proper starts. It's not nearly as Christmassy as last year's, though, despite being set around Christmastime. No killer Christmas trees in this one. :)

Anyway, haven't you ever heard of Christmas in July? :)

  3. That's something of a UK tradition, doing (sometimes extended) Christmas episodes. My opinion of the second season was that same sort of mixed -- "Girl in the Fireplace" is some of the best television I've seen, but the rest varies wildly -- but I'm looking forward to Season 3.

  4. Agreed about season 2 in general and "Girl in the Fireplace" in particular.

To break it down a little more, IMHO, season 3 so far (counting the Christmas special) has had two slightly silly but very entertaining episodes; one ep that, while it had some great moments, was overall pretty stupid, story-wise; one very cool episode that I liked when I first saw it and like better the more I think about it; and one boring and dumb one that also contains a few specific elements that rub me the wrong way. Opinions seem to vary hugely, though, to the point where I'd be mildly surprised if anyone who'd seen them could guess which reaction went with which episode.

Of course, if you ask me, even sub-par Doctor Who is better than no Doctor Who, so uneven or not, I'm definitely enjoying it.

  5. My impression is that, so far, the overall standard - though inevitably uneven - has been higher than in Series 2, which is encouraging. In particular, I think that the two episodes out of the four that have been written by RTD have been the best that he's yet done.

  6. I agree, RTD's episodes from this season are definitely superior to his usual, and "Gridlock," in particular, was a pleasant surprise. I think he's getting better at plot. :)

  8. I do wish the CBC would get around to letting us know when we can get to see it!

  9. I'm a little surprised they haven't, considering that you guys got the first season well before we did.

  10. Also considering that the CBC dumps money into the show. But the US is the larger market...
