Photo-Blogging, Continued

OK, for anybody who wanted to see where I work, this is the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Array Operations Center, in Socorro:

And here's the inside of our (newly and rather spiffily re-designed) control room. This is the correlator side, where I traditionally do my thing:

And here's the array side, where I am currently learning how to babysit actual antennas, rather than just discs of previously-recorded data:

The best thing about this arrangement is that there is no longer a big divider between me and the windows. Actual natural sunlight, hooray!

  3. Funny, I expected it would look a bit shabby and underfunded.

  4. Heh. Well, if you could look close enough, you might see that some of those computers are really old, even if they did get us nice new flatscreens for the PCs... probably with the money they saved by cutting job positions. :P

  5. 1) The building looks scarily like Knox Hall on the NMSU campus. Do you know when it was built? (I'm guessing early 80's, based on the similar architecture.)
    2) Why does a night freak -- I mean "person" -- care about seeing sunlight through the windows?

  6. 1) I'm not sure of the exact date, but early 80s sounds about right.

    2) I like sunlight just fine. My big problem with it is that most of it comes too early in the day. I have to enjoy what I get of it in the afternoons, when I'm awake. :)
