My Poor Young Ears

Clearly I should have gone to more rock concerts in my youth, because that hurt.

  2. Well, on the negative side, it means you're definitely not a teenager any more. On the positive side, it means you didn't experience the highly unpleasant, lingering pain that I did. :)

  3. Yeah, it's really unpleasant, especially at higher volumes. I'm not entirely convinced it's a good thing that I could hear that.

  4. This made me think of something they've put on some new cell phones. It rings at that frequency. The idea being you teenybopper will get the call, but the ring won't annoy anyone else.
It works for most. I can still hear the sound, but most people can't...
It's a bloody annoying sound, that apparently more women than men can hear as adults.
    Odd...

  5. I'm trying to imagine that as a ringtone, and the thought just makes me wince. What's wrong with the "vibrate" setting?

  6. Similar tones have been used to drive teenagers away and fool teachers in equal -- and it seems equally annoying -- measure:

  7. Frankly, piping that noise in public spaces seems like a much, much more antisocial act than teenage loitering.

  8. I couldn't hear a thing, but who'd want to be grouped with teenagers? Even when I was one, I didn't want to be associated with the rest of them.

  9. Or did I hear it? About a minute after the end of the test, I thought I heard something like a mosquito. Maybe I'm just slow.

  10. Or maybe there was a mosquito. :)
