American Frustration

So, I know American Gothic is meant to be a pretty spooky show, but is there a reason why cosmic forces, or possibly a conspiracy of Netflix employees, might want to prevent me from watching it? The first copy of the first disc they sent me was cracked and wouldn't play at all. The second one started out fine, but froze up completely and consistently 20 minutes into the pilot. (And my attempts at cleaning it, if anything, only seemed to make it worse.) At this rate, they're going to run out of copies to send me, and I'm never gonna find out what's up with that creepy sheriff.

  2. Heh. Well, that much I knew. And, man, that guy just had great luck picking long-lived TV shows to work on, didn't he?

  3. Yeah.. poor guy. Mike loves "American Gothic" and used it as material for a game once.. very creepy.

  4. I never watched it back when it was on, but I've heard good things about it, thus it is included on my grand plan to catch up on all the TV that still sounds like its worth watching five or ten years later. It seemed just about ideal for some Halloween viewing, too, but at this rate it'll be November before I manage to see the end of the first episode.

  5. Cole has had more luck in recent years as a supporting actor. I think his longest running lead is as the voice of Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, and as Mike Brady in the two Brady Bunch movies. He's probably best known for Office Space nowadays, though.

Which is probably just as well. Crusade I remember (from both times I watched it through) being pretty lousy, largely from network interference, but also from Straczynski being Straczynski.

I never watched American Gothic all the way through. It was interesting television, the sort of thing you might see more of nowadays but almost never saw in the early '90s, much less on CBS. I remember it as kind of a muddle, with some performances better than others, but Cole was wonderfully devilish in it.

  6. Crusade, if I recall my own reactions to it correctly, started off lousy, and in utterly typical fashion, seemed to be finally pulling itself together and starting to getinteresting when it got canceled.

  7. American Gothic is one of my favorites-of course I'm a Sam Raimi fan :)

  8. Yes, I remember you being a big fan of it back when. I am pretty much enjoying it -- I've seen four episodes now -- but it's a strange show. It's sort of oddly balanced between a really subtle kind of creepiness and, well, Sam Raimi, who I like, but who is not known for subtlety. :)
