Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans! I am going out later to get together with friends for gaming, barbecuing, and fireworks. And probably also some Doctor Who, because there's no better way to get back at the British than to steal their cultural products.
If you're celebrating, drive safe, try not to blow yourself up, and take a moment to actually listen to the lyrics of "Born in the USA" before you assume it's an appropriately patriotic tune for a 4th of July soundtrack. (Yes, Local Radio Station, I am looking at you!)
Have a good one!

True, Born in the USA is not a patriotic song (Springsteen is a Dem, not that democrats are not patriotic) and "Every Breath You Take" is not a love song. I saw an interview with Sting who was saying that people come up to him and say that was our wedding song. He said something like... it's not a love song God help you if that was your wedding song. Hahahahahahahahaha
ReplyDeleteBy the way nobody flame me I wasn't saying that Democrats are not patriotic!!! Just traditionally Republican types love playing/writing patriotic songs----- Happy 4th!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I think I saw that same Sting interview. It's good to know he's perfectly well aware what kind of song he was writing there, even if some of his listeners are clueless. It frankly disturbs me to think that there are people who regard that as romantic and not, y'know, creepy.
ReplyDeleteAnd don't worry, I know what you mean. Republicans are big on their Patriotism Theater, all right. ;)
Funny, I was also watching some Doctor Who this morning. ("Destiny of the Daleks"). Happy 4th (Doctor)!
ReplyDeleteWe watched the season finale again, because some of my friends still hadn't seen it.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see that I'm not the only one who finds the lyric, "You belong to me," downright creepy at the least and "Run away! Run away!" at the worst.
