Cryptic Who Post

So, there's been some Doctor Who news. I'll just link to it without comment, since I guess it's the sort of thing that might actually count as a spoiler if the only place you ever hear Doctor Who news is on my blog and are capable of considering things that get official press releases from the BBC as spoilers. And also because I don't actually have much of a comment, except to say that I'm deeply amused by the fact that apparently said news came in while I'd stepped away from my computer for a brief period to have a conversation in which, among other things, I confidently asserted that precisely this was not going to happen. Heh.

Feel free to discuss in the comments, by the way. We'll call 'em read-at-your-own-risk for people who live in caves.

  4. Maybe we'll get Tom Baker back. :) He must still be younger than William Hartnell was.

  5. Those of us who do live in caves thank you for the care packages you leave at the entrance. (Do we also get to learn who Wee Jimmy Krankie and Big Ian Krankie are, or do we have to look them up ourselves?)

This news just goes to show that they should have switched the Doctor at the end of this season, when they had the chance. Then they could have spared us the crummy ending with the Mocktor entirely.

  6. The Krankies are a UK comedy duo. (I didn't know this before, but I looked it up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Krankies) I'm pretty sure Tennant was joking.

I'd read the rumors about this, but it's interesting to see it now confirmed. On the one hand, I've really grown to love Tennant as the Doctor, and replacing him will be tough. But then, I thought that about Eccleston, too. And I'm sure people have thought that about all the Doctors. (With the possible exceptions of Baker, McCoy, and McGann, just because relatively fewer people were watching at the time then and reactions are so mixed.) After so many incarnations, there's no such thing as the definitive Doctor. I'm really interested to see who they pick as Tennant's replacement.

I'm a little nervous that Davies will be writing the specials. But hopefully the "Turn Left" Davies will show up, not the "The Stolen Earth/Journey's End" Davies.

  7. JH: But is he as well preserved? :)

Captain C: I had no idea who these Krankie people were, either. Fortunately, we have Fred to look things up on Wikipedia for us. :)

And, you know, while I like the idea of at least getting Tennant back for a few more specials, dramatically speaking, you're right. It might have been better if they had just regenerated for real him instead of doing the fake-out. Although, you know, they could have just not done that stupid storyline in the first place...

Fred: I've been hearing rumors that Tennant was leaving since his first season! Which is why I was standing there as the new was breaking going, "Nah, Tennant's not gonna leave for a while yet." Despite that, it's not actually too surprising. Three years is generally considered a pretty good run, and there is something to be said for leaving before it gets old.

As for my own feelings, I can only repeat here what I recently said to someone else who was mildly devastated by the news: It's all part of the cycle of nature. :)

I will confess, the one sinking feeling I did have came with the realization that RTD would be writing the regeneration scene. I... feel a tiny bit bad about that. But he does seem more likely to go wrong when he tries to do "epic." Well, I guess we'll see...

  8. Davies is capable of terrific writing, so I'm going to keep my fingers crossed.

  9. Well, I'll be crossing 'em with you. :)
