Today's Random TV-Related Thought

Watching British cop shows is weird. I keep finding myself thinking, wait a minute, why on Earth don't they just draw their guns-- Oh.

I suspect that, no matter how many British cop shows I watch, this is always going to be the case. Which certainly says something about either about the US or the UK. Or possibly just about me.

  1. American cops pull their guns a lot less often in real life than on TV.

  2. Well, obviously. But that fact doesn't change my expectations of what I'm going to see on a TV show.

  3. British cops dont have guns. They are over here in the hands of kids.

  4. Which shows in particular?

  5. Well, the three examples that have particularly jumped out at me (not all of which are exactly cop shows, I admit) were Cracker, Torchwood and Life on Mars. I've just been watching that last, which was what prompted the post. Although, interestingly enough, there were guns in the next episode.

  6. I've yet to see Life on Mars or Torchwood, but Cracker was crackingly good. I hear they have relaunched the series.
The old Brit cop show I want to see is The Sweeney.

  7. British police don't carry guns?

  8. Nope! Well, I think there are some special divisions that are armed, but regular beat cops don't. I think they get some kind of a stick. :)

  9. I believe that is changing, if it hasn't changed already. Flying Squads (hence Sweeney Todd) signed out firearms and then proceeded to bank hold ups etc.
