Because three things make a post, right?
1. Happy Pi Day! This is an extra-special one: since it's 3/14/15, we've got a couple of extra digits! Too bad I was asleep at 9:26, or I could have really celebrated! Alas, I have no pie, although I do have to go to the grocery store soon, so I think I'm going to rectify that. In the meantime, I will observe the occasion by linking to Phil Plait's 8 Things About Pi for Pi Day post.
2. I am watching Game of Thrones again, now that season 4 is out on DVD. (I've got two episodes left. Do not spoil me!) My reaction to this show at the moment is an interestingly paradoxical blend of, "Man, this crapsack world is too crappy even for me!"[*] and "Ooh, I have got to get around to reading these books!"
3. While we're in mourning for Leonard Nimoy and Terry Pratchett, let's also take a moment to remember Nimoy's fellow Star Trek contributor Harve Bennett, who, as a friend reminded me recently, was responsible for much of the success of the Trek films, and was the person who convinced Nimoy to return for The Wrath of Khan. He died on February 25.
[*] I have something of a taste for dark stories where really bad things happen to everybody. It makes me feel way better about my own life, by contrast.

I think I've given up the idea that I'm going back to the Game of Thrones books anytime soon, if ever. I read the first one many years ago, and I told myself I was only watching the first season of the TV show as a (much-needed) refresher. That was four seasons ago.
ReplyDeleteI have copies of all the books, but they'll have to wait. My next big reading project, I've decided with Pratchett's passing, is to read all of the Discworld books. (It's criminal that I've only ever read the first one.)
I've had the first three Song of Ice and Fire books sitting on my to-read shelves for most of a decade now. For ages I put off reading them for various reasons, including my complete inability to decide whether I should read the books or watch the TV show first. But now that I'm actually caught up on the TV show for the moment, they're starting to call out to me a little bit.
DeleteI sort of envy you, having (almost) all of Discworld in front of you. I think you'll find them very well worthwhile. Although you might want to space them out a bit, as I think they're likely to lose something if you read too many all at once. The first two, by the way, have a rather different feel to them than the rest of the series. I think they read more like a parody of standard sword & sorcery than like a worthwhile story in their own right, and I think the humor's a bit broader and simpler. So if you're not sure about those, do not give up too soon!
I agree about the first two Discworld books. I did almost give up at that point, but am glad that I persevered, as "Equal Rites - the third book in the series - is superb.
DeleteI dunno, I enjoyed Colour of Magic when I read it, and I have no problem with the idea that the series gets better from there. Maybe the early books are outliers, but they're not bad outliers.
