But The Opening Credits Are Exciting!

Today's random link, just because it amuses me: The 7 Most Annoying People To Watch TV With. Alas, I fear I may well qualify as "the overreactor." Let's just say I'm glad there wasn't anybody in the room with me for the last couple of shows I watched. Although I was honestly a little worried that I was making enough noise during the most recent episode of The Walking Dead to attract the attention of the neighbors.

Also... Note to self: I probably should not watch that show before bed. Two zombie apocalypse dreams in two months is really a bit much.

  1. But computerized graphics really are that bad. Why can't we go back to the good old days when George Lucas blowing up models looked more realistic?

    1. Because George Lucas had a much bigger budget than your average TV show? :)

    2. There are plenty of television shows and movies from that more practical effects-driven era that are terrible. And I'll maintain the effects are the one thing Lucas got right in this time of CGI. The prequels are terrible movies, but not because they look bad.

I hesitate to add I wasn't so shocked by (or even really pleased with) this week's Walking Dead ep.

    3. Yeah, I think it's not the how you generate the effects that matter so much as how well you do them and what you with them. To me, beyond "Well, that rubber monster looks amusingly fake" or "Oooh, that planetscape is really pretty," the nature of the FX is often one of the least interesting things in a TV show or movie. The real question is whether they add or detract from the story. (And it's always seemed obvious to me that CGI can involve as much skill and artistry as any other kind of visual, just a different kind than more traditional sorts.)

As for The Walking Dead, I'm really digging it these days. I'm amazed by how much better the show has gotten since its first season. Or how much more to my taste and engaging to me personally it's gotten, which is, of course, the important thing. I'm actually emotionally engaged with the characters these days, which makes a great deal of difference, and I found a fair few things about the last ep affecting and interesting. And it did make me go, "You did what? You did what? You. Did. WHAT?" repeatedly for several very long minutes. But then, yeah. I am totally the over-reactor. :)

  2. Maybe it's a problem with my eyes or my brain interpreting the images. An image of a real actor seems 3-D to me, even though it's on a flat screen. An image of CGI Gollum, on the other hand, looks flat and fuzzy, even though it's supposed to seem real. (By the way, I was thinking of the original Star Wars trilogy.)

    1. Huh, that's kind of interesting. I certainly don't have that response, although I do sometimes have problems processing actual 3D, in ways that other people don't seem to. Mostly just when things are moving too fast, though.
