Not That I Don't Trust Bruce Campbell's Word, But...

So, there's a trailer out for the new Evil Dead remake. Here it is, if you're interested and haven't seen it yet. (Warning: gore! Duh.)

I'm afraid I can't really find it in myself to get very interested in this. If you ask me, the only thing that made the first Evil Dead movie even remotely interesting, other than the presence of Bruce Campbell, is the fact that the gory special effects were so obviously a carefully crafted labor of low-budget love. Twisted, disturbed, ridiculously blood-splattered love. Remake that with actual money and production values (and, if this trailer is an accurate reflection, without the fun, campy humor of Evil Dead 2), and what have you got? What's the point? Other than to remind me that I really need to pick up Cabin in the Woods on DVD, that is.

  1. I was unimpressed, and said so on Twitter, and then was taken slightly to task by a well-meaning fan, who said I should be appreciative because it's been made by (or at least with the support of) the original filmmakers, in this case Campbell and director Sam Raimi. But the original filmmakers can still make a huge mistake, back the wrong horse, make an unnecessary movie. Sure, I would rather they make that mistake than somebody else --it's some comfort that the remake received their blessing -- but I really do not see the point of it. Particularly, as you note, Cabin in the Woods so thoroughly and enjoyably deconstructed this particular genre. (And, as always, I feel like even that is a huge Cabin spoiler.)

The original Evil Dead has its charms, beyond even its low budget and camp, as well as some genuine, lasting scares. The remake might have its moments -- the trailer isn't boring, at least visually -- but my main question after seeing it was, "Okay...but why?"

    1. It's kind of nice to know I'm not the only one who feels that way. Because, yeah, the fact that Campbell and Raimi claim to be happy with it is a good sign, but I am under no obligation to agree with them, am I?
