Random wibblings of an insane science fiction fan
That was quite delightful, wasn't it?
ReplyDelete"I wear fezzes now. Fezzes are cool."
It really, really was. I'm not sure how much sense the finale actually made, but, oh, what wonderful, wonderful nonsense it was. I'm still grinning.
ReplyDeleteAnd, oh, god, the fez! Ha!
I wore the Doctor Who shirt we got at the convention to Universal Studios yesterday and the guy working MIB Alien Attack said my shirt was awesome and he hadn't watched the episode but was really excited.
ReplyDeleteAwesome. Who fans are everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI watched the finale again today with some friends, one of whom, afterward, pumped her fists up into the air and exclaimed, "I love this show so much!"
To which my comment was, "So that's what it looks like from the outside." :)
:)
ReplyDeleteThe fez may be a tip of the hat, so to speak, to Tommy Cooper - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Cooper - a British comedian and magician who famously always wire one during his act.
I've just been watching the Confidential, and according to Steven Moffat, the fez was actually a device to help the audience keep track of the timey-wimeyness. The idea being that when he puts it on, the audience realizes where (or, um, when) he's going next, and is thus ahead of the plot, rather than a step behind trying to catch up. (There. I think that's sufficiently non-spoilery.)
ReplyDeleteYou have to hand it to Moffat. The guy knows how to write time travel. :)
Heck, and I was hoping it was a "tip of the hat" to The Prisoner, via Pinky & the Brain, where Pinky wore a fez. (I -- I mean Brain -- wore a pork pie hat.)
ReplyDeletePresumably there were lots of differemnt items that they could have given the Doctor. Did they say why they chose a fez? If not, I shall continue to believe in a Cooper connection. :)

Which is remarkable, as I suspect (though could be wrong) that he hasn't read much, if any, SF. But he's clearly exceptionally intelligent - perhaps, with the probable exception of Douglas Adams, the cleverest writer that the show has ever had.

ReplyDeleteIn a way, he's actually one of the few writers the show has ever had who actually seems to realize the Doctor is a time traveler.
