Don't Tell The Skeptics Society

Dear Scary-ass freaking movie,

It is very, very unkind of you to attempt to make me afraid of noises in the house at night. I have three cats. And I need to sleep tonight, dammit.

Not usually this easily creeped out,

  1. For a movie that's so low-budget and pretty unsophisticated in its scares, it really is quite effective, isn't it?

  2. I think that may be exactly why it's so effective. It's not only true that sometimes what you don't see is scarier than what you do see, but I think there's also something to be said for ordinariness and simplicity, too. It's much easier for me to identify with people listening to thumping noises in their house at night than with people confronting giant CGI monsters.

Also, what they have, they use really, really well. And ton of credit has to go to the actors. The whole conceit of a movie made by ordinary people with a camcorder is getting to be old hat by now, but I think this may be the first time the actors damned near made me believe it.
