Arguably, I Do Kind Of Need A New Coat

Someone please talk me out of buying myself this for Christmas.

  1. It's cool but way too expensive for what it is!

  2. Yeah, it's sure as hell not cheap. Although, aren't coats usually pretty expensive, anyway? I have that general impression, at least, but I honestly have no idea what your average, bought-new coat actually costs, since I usually get mine military surplus. (And am thus a bit Captain Jack-ish already. :))

  3. The fact that it's 80% polyester is a big minus. That can't be too comfortable.

  4. Man, now I wish I could touch it through the internet and see how it feels.

  5. I don't know what coats generally cost in the US, but it strikes me as being about twice the price that it ought to be. If you buy it, then that's about twenty fewer books that you can afford to buy. :) Also if it's polyester and nylon, then it's not going to be as warm as it looks (though in New Mexico for much of the year that may be a good thing).

    But it is very cool.

  6. You guys are doing pretty good at the talking-out-of. :)

Although less money to buy books would also be a good thing.

  7. One other thought. One expects a good coat to be hardwearing and to last for many years. But one made out of polyester and nylon isn't likely to, unless you only wear it once in a blue moon.

  8. Well, it's the middle of November, and I've only actually worn my current coat maybe twice since last winter so I'm not exactly putting too much wear and tear on it.

I admit, I know pretty much nothing about the advantages and disadvantages of synthetic fabrics.

  9. I will say that's it's a pity John Barrowman is allergic to wool. I understand and like wool. :)

  10. What self-respecting Scot is he, who is allergic to sheep... I mean wool? ;)

  11. Maybe that's why he had to come to America. :)

  12. Considering how terrible the Miracle Day miniseries was, I wish he (Harkness, not Barrowman) had stayed in the UK.

  13. I still haven't seen it. I suppose I'll have to eventually.

  14. It goes from hmm to ehh to ugh to ohh to oh dear god just end. I cannot in good conscience recommend it. There are a few interesting ideas at the start, one genuinely really good episode midway through, and a lot of really awful stuff beyond and around that. Like "makes the first season look like a masterpiece" awful. It's almost a master course in how not to write a television miniseries.

Um, but the coat looks nice. :)

  15. I have to agree with Fred about Miracle Day. I don't know why I stuck it out to the bitter end (unless it was because the female FBI agent was lovely - I don't mean in appearance, though she was pretty enough).

  16. Wow. I mean, not that I've actually heard much of anything good about it. But wow.

(I'm enough of a completist that, one of these days, I probably will watch the damned thing anyway. But I'm in no hurry.)

  17. Just get an old reliable Navy P Coat. Best ever made.

  18. I have an old Swiss Army coat now.

  19. Pop, I heard that they originally called them "urine jackets", but they didn't sell. (Thank you, Mel Brooks!)
