Story of the day: Mysterious Stacks Of Books In NYC! Well, they're not all that mysterious. I mean the article includes the name of the guy leaving the stacks of books around and some quotes from him about why he did it. So... Kind of the opposite of mysterious, really.
Anyway. My bookish heart finds this utterly delightful and is thrilled to know that there are such things in the world. My practical brain, however, can't help kind of agreeing with the people in the comments suggesting that leaving books sitting around outside is probably not the best thing in the world for them.

That very first photo is my daily subway stop and I have never seen stacks of books waiting there! As art project, this is amusing. But yeah, on a practical level...that stack in the elevator was kind of annoying.
ReplyDeleteYou must not have gotten there at the right time.
DeleteAnd the books in the elevator might be annoying, but I think I might find them reassuring. Every time I use the elevator at work -- mostly just to go down to the loading dock and get a replacement jug for the water cooler -- I find myself imagining the elevator getting stuck and me being trapped there without a book. It's a bothersome thought. :)
Zoinks! Thanks for debunking that "mystery", Velma. :)
ReplyDeleteThe artist might think he's sharing his books with others, but a well-meaning subway custodian or park worker might just throw them out (if not report them as a suspicious parcel). If he really cared about the books' feelings and hopes for a good home, he should take them to a used bookstore.
Or a library. But that wouldn't be Art! :)
