Somewhere well into season 1, I found that I'd mysteriously gone from, "Well, I'm not sure this is a good show, but at least it's mostly holding my attention so far" to "Oooh, must have another episode!" I even made a point of catching up with season 2 via streaming so I can now watch it as it comes out. And Carlyle deserves a lot of credit for that, but not all of it.Bettyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06403255764384760662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432116.post-52334786164778721692013-01-09T07:52:14.165-07:002013-01-09T07:52:14.165-07:00I just wish the rest of the show impressed me as m...I just wish the rest of the show impressed me as much.Fredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00277636954260900156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432116.post-83699412147531917422013-01-08T21:17:25.101-07:002013-01-08T21:17:25.101-07:00His scenery-devouring is utterly delightful, but w...His scenery-devouring is utterly delightful, but what really impresses me is his seemingly effortless versatility. I just have this fanciful image in my head of the showrunners testing to see how much they can get out of him. Like, "OK, give us some over-the-top crazy evil. Great! Can you make it fun? Can you make it scary? Can you make it scary and fun? Excellent! By the way, you're also a manipulative genius bastard. Perfect. OK, back to the flamboyant giggling evil, but while you're doing that, we're going to give you a tragic love story. Wow, OK. Of course, you also have to play a more subdued and dignified real-world version of the character every ep, so don't forget to keep giving us that, too. Awesome. Now, can you be evil and sympathetic at the same time? Perfect! Oh, and we also wrote a bunch of flashbacks showing your character's development over a very long time, from his beginning as a very different sort of person, and we're going to do them all out of order. You can handle that, right? Knew you could!" Because he can. That dude impresses the hell out of me. :)Bettyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06403255764384760662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3432116.post-87487512163514965122013-01-08T21:04:08.053-07:002013-01-08T21:04:08.053-07:00Well, Robert Carlyle is definitely one of the bett...Well, Robert Carlyle is definitely one of the better things about Once Upon a Time, not least of all for his scenery-devouring. I still haven't dived back into the show, and have only seen a handful of the first season's episodes, but Rumpelstiltskin's definitely one of the funner elements.
